Start with the symptom

What's acting up?

Pump is loud or won't prime

Bearings, a shaft seal, or air getting in at the lid or a fitting. Catch it before the motor burns out.

Filter pressure keeps climbing

Loaded cartridge, torn pleat, or a filter that's undersized for the pool. Common after dust storms.

Heater won't fire

Low flow, igniter or flame sensor, high-limit switch, or gas supply. Age and heat exchanger condition decide repair vs. replace.

Salt cell shows low output or "no flow"

Calcium scale on the plates is the usual cause in valley water. Sometimes it's the flow sensor or the cell reaching end of life.

Water level keeps dropping

Evaporation is real here, but a pool losing more than the bucket test allows has a leak somewhere: plumbing, light niche, skimmer, or shell.

Pool goes green despite service

Usually a circulation or filtration problem, not a chemical one. Pump runtime, a bypassing filter, or dead spots in the plumbing.

How a repair goes

Diagnose, quote, fix, test.

Step 01Tell us what's going on

Call or send a repair request with what you're seeing. Even "it's making a noise" helps us come with the right parts on the truck.

Step 02Diagnose on site

Pressure, flow, electrical, and a look at the whole pad, not just the part that's complaining. Often one failure is a symptom of another.

Step 03Quote before work

You get the price and the reasoning before anything is replaced. If it's a replace-not-repair situation, we say so and show you the options.

Step 04Fix and test

Repair, run it, and walk you through what was done and what to watch for. The work goes in your service notes if you're on weekly service.

Repair or replace?

How we make the call.

EquipmentUsually repairUsually replace
PumpSeal, lid o-ring, capacitor, or a single bad bearing on a newer pumpBurned motor, or a failed single-speed pump over about 1 HP (California efficiency rules mean the replacement is variable-speed)
FilterCartridge cleaning, o-rings, gauge, air reliefCracked tank, torn or collapsed cartridges, or a filter that's too small for the pool
HeaterIgniter, flame sensor, high-limit, pressure switch on a unit under 10 yearsFailing heat exchanger, corroded burner tray, or a unit past 10 to 12 years
Salt cellAcid cleaning to remove scale; flow sensorPlates worn through, typically at three to five years in desert water
AutomationRelays, sensors, transformerBoard failures on discontinued systems where parts are no longer made

What the desert does to equipment

Heat cooks pump motors and capacitors on the equipment pad, especially in full sun. Dust storms load filters overnight. Hard water leaves calcium scale inside heat exchangers and on salt cells, which is why both fail younger here than the manufacturer's brochure suggests. UV chews on plastic lids, unions, and cleaner parts.

None of that is a reason to panic. It's a reason to have someone looking at the pad every week and to catch small problems while they're cheap.

What drives the price

  • The part itself (a capacitor vs. a whole motor vs. a new heater)
  • Whether the pad needs re-plumbing or electrical to fit the new part
  • One trip vs. a part we have to order
  • Permits for heater, gas, and electrical work

Most repairs are one visit. Pump and heater swaps are usually a half day.

Equipment we work on

Pentair, Hayward, Jandy / Zodiac, and Polaris cleaners, plus most older equipment still running in the valley. We're an authorized warranty service center for Pentair, Jandy, and Hayward, so a warranty claim comes to us instead of a shipping label. If we can't get the part, we'll tell you.

New equipment

Installation, not just repair.

When a part is past saving, or you want to upgrade before it fails, we install new equipment: variable-speed pumps, cartridge and DE filters, gas and heat-pump heaters, salt systems, automation, and robotic or pressure-side cleaners. The Pool Store stocks or orders it; Roadrunner installs it and runs the startup.

The desert changes what we recommend. Oversized filters run longer between cleanings when the dust hits. Variable-speed pumps run slow and long, which is what a pool in 110-degree heat needs. Heaters get sized to the pool and spa, not the sticker.

Automation and salt systems

Pentair and Jandy automation, salt chlorinators, and app control. Installed, programmed, and explained before we leave.

Automatic pool cleaners

Repair on suction, pressure, and robotic cleaners, and new units matched to your pool's shape and debris.

How an install goes

  • We look at the pad, the plumbing, and the electrical, then quote the unit and the install as one number
  • Permits pulled where the city requires them (heaters, gas, electrical)
  • Old equipment hauled off, new equipment plumbed, wired, and pressure-tested
  • Startup and a walkthrough of the settings, plus the manufacturer registration

Buying the equipment at The Pool Store and having Roadrunner install it means one phone number if anything goes wrong under warranty.

Commonly asked questions

Do you quote before you do the work?

Yes, every time. We diagnose on site, tell you what's wrong and what it costs to fix, and you decide. Nobody replaces a part without your OK.

My pump is loud. Does that mean it's dead?

Usually not. A screaming or grinding pump is most often a failing bearing or a seal that's let water into the motor. Sometimes it's just air getting in at the lid or a fitting. It's worth looking at before the motor cooks itself.

Should I replace a single-speed pump with a variable-speed?

In California, yes, and in most cases you have to: state efficiency rules mean replacement pool pumps are variable-speed. The good news is they cut the electric bill noticeably, and they're quieter.

Why does my filter pressure keep climbing?

Dust, algae, and fine debris load the filter. In the desert a dust storm can add several PSI overnight. Cartridges need cleaning more often here, and a cartridge that won't come clean or has a torn pleat needs replacing. A DE or sand filter that won't hold pressure after a backwash has its own set of causes we can check.

Why is my heater not firing?

Common causes are low water flow (dirty filter, closed valve), a bad igniter or flame sensor, a tripped high-limit, or gas supply. Heaters over 10 to 12 years old with a failing heat exchanger are usually a replace, not a repair. We'll tell you which.

How do I know if I have a leak or just evaporation?

Summer evaporation here can be an inch or more per week, which fools a lot of people. The bucket test tells you: set a bucket of pool water on a step, mark both levels, and compare after 24 hours with the pump off. If the pool drops faster than the bucket, call us.

Do you work on salt systems and automation?

Yes. Salt cells, flow sensors, control boards, and automation systems like Pentair and Jandy. Salt cells in valley water scale up fast and typically last three to five years.

Do you install new equipment, or only repair?

Both. Pumps, filters, heaters, salt systems, automation, and cleaners. The Pool Store sells it, Roadrunner installs it, and the install is quoted with the equipment as one number.

Pool and spa rails installed ordered over a month ago. Was called twice saying ready to install tomorrow, when install schedule for 8/14. Pool rail not available on 8/14 install date. You have a scheduling/communication problem. Install team was fine.

Your on-site workmanship is wonderful. I enjoy working with your Staff. You’re on-site workmanship is wonderful. I enjoy working with your Staff. On the other hand your invoicing method that I just experienced is awful! I get an invoice on July 29 indicating the payment was due on July 28! I got another invoice today indicating I am two days past due.
